Girl Choristers perform for world leading conductor

One of the world's foremost exponents of choral conducting gave a masterclass on Friday 18 June to the Girl Choristers.

The founder of the National Youth Choir, Mike Brewer OBE took a break from his busy schedule to spend the afternoon at School, where he took the girls out of their comfort zone through a world music workshop.

Mr Brewer led BBC workshops for "Last Choir Standing" in 2008 and is consultant for over 20 prize winning UK choirs, including the world famous girls' choir, Cantamus. He has often served as adjudicator for the finals of "Choir of the Year" and the National Festival of Music for Youth in the UK and in international competitions.

The visit from Mr Brewer, builds on a programme of events organised by Llandaff Cathedral School, which has seen the 21 girls, aged eight to 15 sing for some of the world's leading choral experts.

Llandaff Cathedral School's Headmaster, Stephen Morris said: "With workshops at Eton and Clare College Cambridge this year and visits to Lincoln Cathedral and St George's Chapel Windsor scheduled for next year, these visits provide unimaginable opportunities for the girls, such as joining forces with Eton's Chapel Choir, working with leading vocal expert, Tim Brown and singing Evensong with the Choral Scholars of the internationally renowned Clare College Choir."

Mr Simon Lovell-Jones, Assistant Director of Music at Llandaff Cathedral School added: "We were delighted to welcome Mike to Cardiff and thoroughly enjoyed learning how we can improve our technique further - the girls are fantastic and I hope Mike enjoyed working with them as much as I do."

The girls have been invited to Hungary next summer, where they are set to be the choir in residence at the International Kodaly Festival in Kecskemet.

Established at Llandaff Cathedral in 1995, the Girl Choristers rehearse daily at school, singing at the Cathedral twice a week and on two weekends per term, as well as at local community events.

Auditions to become a girl chorister are held regularly at the School and for further information, please contact Mrs Pam Critcher, Registrar at Llandaff Cathedral School on 029 2056 3179 or registrar@cathedral-school.co.uk.
