Budding Engineers

We are delighted to share the fantastic achievement of our Year 12 Engineering Education Scheme Wales (EESW) team, who attended the Awards and Presentation Day at Swansea University last week.

The EESW project is a highly respected national programme that sees around 600 students from across Wales take part each year, working in teams of up to eight to solve real-world engineering problems set by industry professionals.

Our team of eight students (Sara K, Deepa G, Max C-T, Cameron H, Felix P, Rhys W, Jack H and Oscar R) worked in partnership with NHS Wales Shared Services Partnership – Specialist Estates Services to design a sustainable solution for a future cancer treatment facility. Their project required them to consider complex challenges such as environmental impact, energy use, construction methods and ensuring continuity of patient care, mirroring the demands faced by real engineers and designers.

After months of research, development and collaboration, culminating in a detailed written report, exhibition stand and professional presentation to industry assessors, our students were recognised at the highest level.

Out of a very competitive field, the team were nominated for three prestigious awards:

  • Best Appreciation of Environmental Issues
  • Best Use of IT/Coding
  • Best Appreciation of Current Built Environment Principles

We are incredibly proud to announce that they won the award for Best Appreciation of Current Built Environment Principles.

This is an outstanding achievement, particularly given the scale of the competition and the fact that only a small number of teams are selected as award winners on the day. Teams are assessed across a wide range of demanding criteria including technical knowledge, problem solving, project management and presentation skills.

The success of our students reflects not only their technical understanding, but also their teamwork, resilience and professionalism throughout the project. The experience has allowed them to develop invaluable skills in communication, leadership and real-world problem solving skills that will support them in future university applications and careers in STEM.

This is a remarkable accomplishment for our school and a testament to the dedication and talent of all eight students involved. We look forward to seeing what they achieve next.
