This week saw us celebrating our fourth in-house DofE Presentation Evening. At this event we celebrate the achievements of the students who participated in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme during the previous academic year.
This year our special guest was Mr Jeff Smith. A former player for Cardiff Devils Ice Hockey, Jeff is the founder of the non-profit organisation 'Bigmoose'. He enthralled us with tales, images and video of his many adventures, especially the ultimate challenge of climbing Everest at the age of 53. His exploits sounded both amazing and terrifying and his sincere persuasion that we can all be 'something more' was certainly inspiring.
We were entertained this year by the school's Barbershop Group, sounding so professional as usual, and I am extremely grateful to the boys for stepping up to perform for us.
This year we awarded 58 Bronze, 33 Silver and 6 Gold certificates for the 2016-17 season. This gives us a completion rate of 62% at present; this figure will climb over the next 12 months as more students complete the remaining sections of their award and get their awards verified using their online accounts. Our completion rate remains strong against the national target of 50% and our participation rate has remained high with over two thirds of Year 10 - 12 students participating in DofE last year.
For the 2017-18 season our participation rate remains at 67% but we have a record number of gold participants with 39 of our Sixth Form students choosing to take part in the Gold Award. DofE@CSL has never been stronger and I would like to reiterate my heartfelt thanks to everyone involved.
