Former England and Glamorgan cricketer, Simon Jones MBE is the latest addition to the Cathedral School sports coaching team.
Simon, who played international cricket for England 18 times and was an integral member of the 2005 winning Ashes side will become sports coach next month.
Simon joins the Cathedral School as cricket is introduced at the school this year for girls. Working with Cricket Wales throughout the winter in preparation, the girls’ coaching staff will also benefit from Simon’s expertise.
On his appointment, Simon Jones said: “I am really looking forward to working at the Cathedral School. The commitment and enthusiasm from the pupils I have met so far is very impressive. With one of the most picturesque cricket squares in Wales, I am very much looking forward to the season ahead.”
Director of Sport at the Cathedral School, Mark Barrington added: “Simon is a fantastic addition to our sports coaching staff, giving our pupils the opportunity to learn from someone who has played sport at the highest level. His experience will both nurture the growth of our younger and aspiring cricketers and inspire our older pupils to achieve their potential.”
Other members of the sports team include Nia Jones who will represent Wales at the Commonwealth Games in netball and former pupil, Adam Roscrow who represented Wales C in football this week.
Clare Sherwood, Head of the Cathedral School said: “As a keen player and supporter of cricket, I am delighted to welcome Simon to the school. His international experience and skills will undoubtedly play an important role as we embark on girls’ cricket this summer, building on our already established sporting tradition.”
This season, the Cathedral School will host the MCC in May following the successful inaugural match last year, as well as the MCCU v Gloucestershire CCC and the first Cathedral Schools 1st XI Festival.
The Simon Jones Cricket Academy will run at the Cathedral School during school holidays for budding cricketers, girls and boys, aged 6-13. For further details, please email simonjonescricket@gmail.com
