Going for Gold

During activities week, seven Year 12 students formed an expedition team and set off on their Gold Qualifier Expedition.

A Gold Qualifier takes place over three days and four nights. It is an intense hike that traverses mountainous landscapes with steep climbs and descents. Students must carry everything they could possibly need for the duration of their expedition in addition to all their camping gear. Each morning students pack their tents back into their rucksack and set off on another walk. Taking part in a Gold Qualifier is a monumental achievement and each student who participated should be extremely proud of their efforts and accomplishment.

The expedition began at Craig-y-Nos Country Park in the Brecon Beacons. From here, students spent the day hiking west along the 800m ascent to the breath-taking views of Fan Brycheiniog. Students were amazed by the views and luckily saw them again the following day, when they hiked along the ridge overlooking Llyn y fan fach and Llyn y fan fawr. At the campsite, students were able to exchange stories around an open campfire with a view of the valley below. The third day saw students head eastward, traversing more difficult forest terrain made more difficult by their large rucksacks, to the Ystradfellte valley for the third and final night. The final day saw students hiking to the picturesque Henrhyd Falls. I will always remember the look of accomplishment (and relief) on their faces at the finish line!

All students showed the highest level of camp craft, teamwork and positivity. Together they worked together to overcome obstacles and they motivated each other to succeed. I hope they will cherish their memories (and team songs) forever!

I would like to say a huge thank you to Mrs Dinsmore who led the expedition while I led the Year 10 expedition. The students are extremely grateful for the time you put into their expedition and the expert advice you were able to give them. I am also extremely grateful to Mr Lovell-Jones and Mrs Carbin for supervising the students.
