Information Afternoon Year 7 entry 2027
Tuesday 10 November 1645-1730
This year's house singing competition highlighted the sense of belonging at CSL. The three main choirs were commented upon by the judges as being wonderfully inclusive and with the competition held within our community, in Llandaff Cathedral, the evening had a very special feel to it.
We welcomed our Director of Music to the judging panel, the first time Mr Aspden was able to do so, and we welcomed back OL Owen Parsons. Both thoroughly enjoyed the evening passing difficult judgement on a very high standard of competition.
The theme for this year's main choir was Country and Dyfrig House kicked us off with 9-5 from Dolly Parton and this certainly set the tone for the evening. The difficult task of opening the evening in the Cathedral was taken into consideration by the judges. The judges noted that there was clear direction, a wonderful balance of ages and a good balance of gender in the choir with an excellent piano accompaniment. It was a confident performance. Euddogwy then followed with a wonderful rendition of Wagon Wheel by Darius Rucker. The judges were both wowed by the harmonies within this song, with clear direction, some lovely dynamics, and an excellent grasp of rhythm and text. A strong confident bow at the end illustrated the togetherness within the choir. Teilo then sang See You Again by Carrie Underwood. The judges commented on a good demographic balance and excellent presentation. The choir sang confidently, with a well-suited range of tones for the song. Their confident ensemble was strong across the range. A difficult decision for the judges but Euddogwy came out on top with 87 points followed by Teilo on 80 and Dyfrig on 78. Congratulations to all pupils involved in the Main Choirs.
The A Cappella performances are always a treat. Many breaktimes are taken for extra rehearsals and whilst the older pupils generally take part in this there was a call from the judges to have more representation from the younger years. Dyfrig again started the performances with Man in the Mirror. There was clear diction and an excellent harmonic awareness with this difficult piece. Euddogwy followed with what Mr Aspden described as an 'absolutely golden performance'. There was confidence oozing through the ensemble and an outstanding purity of tone; a very strong and secure performance of Only You by Yazoo. Teilo finished the competition with a very engaging mash up of songs. There was a strong sense of rhythm and a confident dynamic. This song had the best gender balance of the three performances and a little more diction would have seen a higher score. Overall Euddogwy came a clear first in the A Cappella with 91 points and it was a very close call for second with Dyfrig on 79 points and Teilo on 78 points.
A double victory for Euddogwy has broken Dyfrig's winning streak of five years and a thoroughly deserved victory it was. Well done to all involved and special praise to the significant amount of time and hard work put in by the student leaders. House points currently stand at:
