Junior Summer Concert

Our Junior Summer Music Concert showcased the incredible musical talent, enthusiasm, and dedication of our pupils across a wide range of ensembles in Llandaff Cathedral on Wednesday.

The concert began with a special highlight: the premiere performance of a piece co-composed by student Owain J and his teacher, Mr Nikolaidis in the Guitar Ensemble. The ensemble delivered a striking opening on amplified guitars, beautifully resonating through the Cathedral space.

Our Harp Ensemble made their summer concert debut with a poised performance of Ode to Joy. This was particularly impressive given that the group is made up of mostly beginner players who have been learning together during breaktimes. Their confidence and musicality were a testament to their commitment and teamwork.

The Brass Ensemble followed with a flowing rendition of Gentle River, before lifting the atmosphere with an energetic and uplifting Gospel Rock piece, which was received warmly by the audience.

Both Recorder Groups performed with great confidence and enthusiasm. They were joined by the wonderfully named Toots and Doods, who brought character and charm with their performances of a lively Blues Boogie and the playful Cloud Cuckoo and Circus Time.

Cantemus performed a beautifully lyrical piece by Jacob Collier, which captivated the audience with its warmth and expression. Cantate brought a sense of fun and humour with their spirited rendition of I’m a Pink Toothbrush. The two choirs then joined together for an energetic performance of Try Everything, filling the Cathedral with a jubilant and uplifting sound.

The Percussion Ensemble transported listeners into the world of Jurassic Park with an atmospheric and dramatic performance, demonstrating impressive control and creativity.

From the Junior Flute Group, we heard two contrasting pieces: the lively Dance of the Street Urchins followed by a playful and contemporary performance of I’m Just Ken from Barbie!, both delivered with flair and confidence.

The String Ensemble provided a stirring rendition of Ode to Joy, before delighting the audience with the humorous and imaginative Melted Mouse and Roasted Rat in Chocolate Sauce, showing both their versatility and sense of fun.

The concert concluded with a grand finale: a powerful and collaborative performance of Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture, bringing together brass, flutes, strings, and percussion. This impressive, combined effort created a thrilling and memorable end to the concert.
