BBC Radio 3 visited Llandaff for a live broadcast of Choral Evensong. Though the broadcast takes place weekly, this was the first time the service has come from Llandaff since 1997 and a lot of hard work and preparation went in to make sure it was a showcase for the high standard of music making which takes place in the Cathedral. 25 choristers from Years 6-11 were involved and this also marked the first time ever that girl choristers appeared on a Choral Evensong broadcast from Llandaff.

The Cathedral choir sang music by composers from the 20th and 21st centuries including Eleanor Daley, Grayston Ives and Kenneth Leighton. The choristers also performed the beautiful miniature He prayeth best that loveth best by Welsh composer Morfydd Owen, singing the first verse in Welsh. A large and appreciative congregation were in the Cathedral for the service, braving the rain and wind to queue outside whilst the choir rehearsed.

Only two weeks into the new academic year, the choristers are to be commended for taking such an occasion in their stride. We hope it won’t be another 25 years before the BBC return to the Cathedral for the next broadcast!
