To mark Safer Internet Day, pupils throughout the school have engaged in different activities this week to highlight positive uses of technology and to explore the role we all play in helping to create a better and safer online community.
Senior tutor periods focused on the dangers and risks that young people are currently facing. A variety of resources were shown and seminars conducted about potential responses to difficult situations. Well done to the pupils for engaging so maturely.
In the Primary section, pupils enjoyed a day of hands-on activities that challenged their understanding of working digitally. KS1 talked about the ways in which they use the internet and learned about digital footprints by appreciating the fact that what you do on the internet can leave a trace and builds up a picture of your likes and interests. They also created their own class blogs by making posts about themselves – they even spent time reading each other’s posts and leaving encouraging comments about their work.
KS2 explored which online behaviours have a positive effect on young people, and which types of online behaviours have a negative effect. They considered how they could manage an online conflict in a positive way, and then described actions they could take online that would make themselves and their friends feel happy and good about themselves.
Pupils from Years 3 to 6 discussed how they felt about different statements in their assembly, after which they looked at various aspects of internet safety and how best to share respect online.
It was wonderful to offer our pupils so many opportunities to highlight this issue. Thank you to Mr Reardon and Mr Patterson for producing such thought provoking resources.
