Marking Safer Internet Day

Safer Internet Day 2019 was celebrated across the School on Tuesday with the global theme of 'Together for a Better Internet'.

With more than 2,000 schools and organisations involved, this year's Safer Internet Day was the biggest yet and helped to inspire a national conversation about using technology responsibly, respectfully, critically and creatively.

The Seniors explored and discussed the topic of consent with regards to social media and posting online.  Pupils were given many scenarios to discuss and to decide if permission or consent were required before something was posted or shared online either using a computer or a mobile phone.  It is important that consent is given as this enables privacy to be protected and any possible upset or offensiveness to be avoided.  Pupils were reminded that once comments, images or videos have been shared online the original owner no longer has any control as they could be further shared without their consent.  These sessions are important topics to ensure that our pupils continue to develop as responsible digital citizens.

After a morning assembly led by our digital leaders, every child from Nursery to Year 6 was empowered to take control of their digital lives and considered how consent works in an online context. They explored how young people ask for, give and receive consent online which could be in their friendships or relationships, how they take and share images and videos or how they manage their privacy data.

The children finished the day with an improved understanding of consent and an appreciation of the importance of asking for, and giving, permission when working online.
