National Poetry Day: Discovering Wonder Through Words

Pupils across the School celebrated National Poetry Day yesterday, embracing this year's theme of Wonder through a range of creative and engaging activities. From our youngest learners to our Senior pupils, children were encouraged to slow down, look closely at the world around them and find inspiration in everyday moments.

From listening to and performing poems to creating their own writing, pupils were encouraged to discover beauty, curiosity and inspiration in ordinary objects and experiences. Year 6 pupils enthusiastically brought Spike Milligan's much-loved poem On the Ning Nang Nong to life, reciting it aloud with great energy and enjoyment. As they performed, they gradually added different voices, actions and sound effects, transforming the nonsense poem into a lively and memorable shared experience.

Elsewhere, pupils explored the theme of wonder through their own creative writing, using the prompt "I wonder..." to inspire imaginative poems and reflections. Older pupils took part in a Wonder Walk, searching for everyday items that might otherwise go unnoticed before transforming them into something extraordinary through poetry.

The day was a wonderful celebration of language, imagination and creativity, reminding us all that poetry can help us discover ‘wonder' in even the smallest things.
