Following their continued excellence at A Level last week, The Cathedral School is once again celebrating outstanding GCSE results.
An exceptional 44% of grades were 9 or 8 (England Pathway – equivalent to A*), with 66% of all grades at 9-7 (A*/A).
The most common grade awarded overall was 8 (A*). In nine subjects – Art, Biology, Chemistry, Design & Technology, Drama, French, History, Physics and Religious Studies – the most common grade was 9 (A*).
100% of pupils achieved the equivalent of at least five GCSE grades 9-4 (A*-C), including first language and Mathematics.
Top performers, Louise G, music scholar and Young Citizens Bar Mock Trial finalist and Gracie B, who took a lead role in this year’s Senior production of Guys and Dolls, achieved all grade 9s. On news of these outstanding results, Louise said: “I'm very happy with my results and I'd like to say thank you to all my teachers for helping me to prepare.”
Other pupils who achieved all grade 8s and 9s included Cricket Wales player, Elis S, talented artist, Olivia R and saxophonist, Toby S along with other Sixth Form scholars, Ellie E, Ambalika R and Mihaly TT. Toby said: “I'm so glad all my hard work has paid off and I'm really looking forward to continuing my studies in the Sixth Form. I'm studying Maths, Biology, Chemistry and Geography.”
Ambalika added: “Great teachers and care have led to excellence in my GCSEs and I look forward to continuing this in my A levels - Biology, Chemistry, Maths and Latin.”
Head of the Cathedral School, Mrs Clare Sherwood said: “I was delighted to welcome Year 11 pupils to school today to celebrate their excellent GCSE results. They are a fantastic year group who have remained focused and hardworking during the last two years, while being very supportive of each other.
“I am incredibly proud of their academic achievements as well as their achievements beyond the classroom be it on the sports field representing Great Britain in baseball or Wales in cricket, Cardiff Rugby, the Regional Academy for netball and Swim Wales or in music for the National Children’s Choir or the National Youth Orchestra for Wales.
“I am very much looking forward to welcoming our new Year 12 students at the beginning of September, including those joining us from other schools who are attracted by excellent results, breadth of opportunity, strong emphasis upon preparation for top universities, and supportive pastoral care.”
This year, The Cathedral School’s A Level students progress to the most selective and sought after universities, including Cambridge, Imperial College London, Bristol, Cardiff, Manchester, Birmingham and Nottingham.
