VE Day Celebrations

Friday 8th May 2020 marks the day on which Allied forces formally announced the surrender of Germany, bringing the Second World War to a close. Sophie G (Year 12) has kindly shared a story with us about her ‘adopted grandmother’, Eileen Younghusband, who was a filter officer in the WAAF during World War II and has written two volumes of memoirs on her wartime experiences.

Below is an extract from her story:

Eileen was very special to me and even though I was very young I learnt a lot from her. She was kind, humble, determined, funny, resourceful and resilient. She definitely lived her life by the ACOAL values underpinning The Cathedral School. Even in the COVID crisis we are living through now I often think how Eileen would have tackled situations and I am grateful for knowing her and the values she taught me.
On the VE Day celebrations this year, please don’t just look at the photographs, think about the stories behind them. As one of many lessons Eileen taught me, “You are never too old … or too young to make a difference”.

Thank you, Sophie for sharing such a heartwarming story with us, it is no surprise why she became such an inspirational figure to you.

It was also great to see so many of our pupils celebrating VE Day by baking Union Jack cakes, dressing up and doing many other exciting things.
