World Book Day 2021

05 March 2021
World Book Day 2021

World Book Day is always fantastic fun at CSL and the sight of pupils and staff dressed up as book characters made it clear that this year was to be no different.

In the Senior Section, pupils reinforced their #screensdownbooksup motto. Pupils in KS3 have been participating in reading and related activities during their English lessons. These have included:

• Photos of themselves with their favourite books

• Reading to a sibling

• Writing an interesting book review or blog about their current reading book

• Making a book in a jar exhibit

• Dressing up a potato as their favourite book character

Some wonderfully creative submissions were received.

In the Primary Section, the day started with a bang with their very own Sherlock Holmes (Mr Hemley) introducing a superb World Book Day assembly in which Year 6 pupils highlighted the importance of reading. Speaking of their favourite books, giving their top-tips for reading, and releasing this year’s reading challenge, the audible cheers made it clear that the film had been a huge success. Made up of nearly 100 different video clips, what an incredible job Year 6 pupils did! But the fun was not to stop there, for afterwards, the older year groups enjoyed a fascinating World Book Day talk given by the best-selling children’s author David Walliams. Not to miss out on the fun, the younger pupils were also enjoying themselves. Nursery and Reception pupils listened to their very own story-time which featured recordings of older pupils reading their favourite children’s books. Expressive and clear, the Year 6 volunteers really brought their books to life, and their younger listeners sweetly watched on in silence, totally engrossed. In KS1, pupils took part in an outdoor World Book Day treasure hunt, finding and answering questions about various story characters. After reading the story of Supertato, a very unusual superhero, Year 1 pupils designed their own vegetable superhero, complete with special powers. Reception pupils enjoyed activities based on The Tiger who Came to Tea and were delighted that the tiger itself made a special virtual visit to read the story to them. After break, the pupils were treated to World Book Day presenations by some of their favourite authors. Listening to the likes of Derek Lang, Frank Cottrell-Boyce, Sita Brahmachari and Sue Hendra (to name a few), classes learnt all about the world of books, looking at plots, settings and characters, and participating in fun and creative tasks. Both teachers and pupils enjoyed the day massively! Bring on World Book Day 2022!
