Year 5 Explore Big Pit

As part of this term's topic, Pits and Ponies, Year 5 pupils visited the Big Pit National Coal Museum in Blaenafon – an experience that proved both educational and memorable.

During the visit, pupils took part in an underground tour, descending 90 metres into the former working coal mine. Guided by former miners, they explored the narrow tunnels and learnt about the harsh realities and dangers of life underground. This powerful, first-hand insight brought their classroom learning vividly to life.

The children also engaged in the interactive When Coal was King exhibition, which explored the vital role coal played in shaping the economy and communities of South Wales, Cardiff, and the docks. The visit concluded with a chance to explore the Pit Head Baths, deepening pupils’ understanding of the social history surrounding the mining industry.

The trip was a great success, offering an invaluable opportunity for pupils to broaden their knowledge of South Wales’ rich industrial heritage. Many left with a deeper appreciation of the region’s past, and a strong sense of curiosity for what more there is to discover.
