BEST GCSE RESULTS EVER FOR THE CATHEDRAL SCHOOL
The Cathedral School has achieved its best GCSE results with its pupils securing an exceptional 55% of grades at 9 or 8 (equivalent to A**/A*) and 72% of all grades at 9-7 (A*/A).
A quarter of the cohort achieved exclusively grades 9 or 8 with 100% of all grades at 9-4 (A*-C). The most common grade awarded overall was 9 (A**), the highest possible grade.
Six pupils gained all grade 9s (A**) including Wales cross country runner, Sam B, cellist, Christopher F, member of the National Youth Choir of Great Britain and 2Wish Ambassador, Emma N and clarinettist, Yuxuan W.
On news of her outstanding results, Emma, who will study Maths, Further Maths, Chemistry and History at the School’s Sixth Form said: “I am so pleased with my results – it feels so surreal! I’m really grateful to my teachers for their support and I'm looking forward to Sixth Form. Having hockey as an outlet at school and playing for my club has helped me focus on my academics and get the right balance.”
Sam, who will join Emma in the Sixth Form to study Maths, Further Maths, Chemistry and Biology added: “I’m really happy with my results – it’s a big relief after such a long wait! I found running really helpful during revision as it gave me a nice break and helped to clear my mind. I’m really looking forward to starting Sixth Form in September.”
12 pupils secured all grade 8s and 9s and include flautists, Emily H and Katayani R, dancer, Timea TT, former boy choristers, Ayush M and Onkon R and debater, Myles C.
Head of the Cathedral School, Mrs Clare Sherwood said: “I was absolutely delighted to congratulate the pupils today on their excellent results. With more than half of the grades being at 9 or 8, these are our best ever GCSE results.
“In addition to their academic success, this year group embraces all that the School has to offer beyond the classroom. Enjoying success on the sports field as U16 Hockey National Champions, they won the Cardiff University Life Sciences Challenge, Welsh Chess Rapid Play and were English Speaking Union (ESU) runners up. Their musical talents contribute to our busy events calendar with their individuality shining through at our hugely popular Rock and Pop concerts.
“Our inspirational teachers know each one of our pupils as individuals. Their expertise and hard work, along with our strong sense of community provide a secure foundation to enable every child to flourish.
“I am very much looking forward to welcoming our new Year 12 students at the beginning of September, including those joining us from other schools who are attracted by excellent results, small class sizes, breadth of opportunity, strong emphasis upon preparation for top universities, and supportive pastoral care.”
This year, The Cathedral School’s A Level students progress to the most selective and sought after universities, including Oxford, Cambridge, Bristol, Exeter, Birmingham and Nottingham.
