GCSE EXCELLENCE CONTINUES AT THE CATHEDRAL SCHOOL

Following the strongest A Level results since sixth form teaching began in 2013, The Cathedral School (CSL) is once again celebrating excellent GCSE results.

An exceptional 44% of grades were 9 or 8 (England Pathway – equivalent to A*), with 64% of all grades at 9-7 (A*/A). The most common grade awarded overall was 9, the highest possible grade.

100% of pupils achieved the equivalent of at least five GCSE grades 9-4 (A*-C), including English, Mathematics and Science.

Top performers, Evie H-J who joined the School in Year 9 and Bence S, an academic scholar, achieved 9 grade 9s. On news of these outstanding results, Evie said: “I feel incredibly happy and very proud of my results. I’ve enjoyed the community environment at the School and the support from the teachers. They have all encouraged me to try my best and to work really hard. I feel more confident in my classes than before I joined CSL and I’m really looking forward to sixth form.”

Taking the next step towards their A Levels, Evie will study Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics and Geography at the School’s Sixth Form, while Bence will study Mathematics and Further Mathematics, Physics and History.

Other pupils who achieved all grade 8s and 9s included Wales U17 Badminton player, Faaris A and music scholar, Iris L, both also members of the School team who were regional final winners of the ESU Public Speaking this year; along with 1st team footballer, Jack S and sixth form scholar, William R, as well as Katy S who took a lead role in the recent Senior production of Made in Dagenham and former Head Chorister, Agnes R who is the last of her six siblings to attend the School.

Head of the Cathedral School, Mrs Clare Sherwood said: “I was absolutely delighted to congratulate the pupils this morning on their excellent GCSE results which, like our A Levels, also buck the UK national trend. The resilience and hard work of all our pupils, combined with their passion for getting involved with all aspects of school life exemplify our whole school community ethos.

“I am incredibly proud of our pupils for their academic results as well as their achievements beyond the classroom be it on the sports field with national representation for squash or Cardiff Rugby or in music for the National Youth Orchestra for Wales.

“I am very much looking forward to welcoming our new Year 12 students at the beginning of September, including those joining us from other schools who are attracted by excellent results, small class sizes, breadth of opportunity, strong emphasis upon preparation for top universities, and supportive pastoral care.”

This year, The Cathedral School’s A Level students progress to the most selective and sought after universities, including Oxford, Cambridge, Bath, Bristol, Exeter, Cardiff, Warwick, Birmingham and Nottingham.
