Cathedral School rewarded for green initiatives

The Cathedral School Llandaff has become the first independent school in Cardiff to be awarded the Green Flag for its commitment to the environment.

Externally assessed by Eco Schools Wales, the Cathedral School was also named an example of excellence for other schools embarking on this initiative.

Having met and surpassed seven criteria, including the Eco-Committee, the environmental action plan and the evaluation of progress, the School becomes one of the 40% of schools in Wales registered with Eco Schools to gain this recognition.

Eco Schools has been run at the Cathedral School as a co-curricular activity for three years and currently has 30 members from the Infant, Junior and Senior sections who meet half termly.

Headmaster Mr Stephen Morris said: "We are all absolutely delighted to have been awarded the Green Flag.  An enormous amount of work has been undertaken by the Eco Schools team, which has certainly paid off.  Well done to everyone involved."

Year 11 pupil Emma L, Chairperson of the Eco committee added: "We have worked hard to raise awareness of this important issue by introducing a number of initiatives, such as food waste bins at lunchtime, which has seen on average 1000kg of food waste per month being sent to be turned into soil improver.  Looking forward we are keen to improve on what we have achieved so far and hopefully this news will encourage more pupils to get involved."
