CSL Election Results

On Friday 1st May students from Years 6-13 went to the polls.

Polling stations were set up in three locations so that all pupils eligible to vote could make their choice. The Senior 10 team were in attendance as returning officers to ensure the voting went smoothly and was as authentic an experience as possible.

After the vote the count began, results were analysed and checked and the party representatives assembled for the results announcement. Classes joined the broadcast and the tension mounted. Professionally hosted by our recently appointed Heads of School, Amog MB and Salma A, the time had finally come to reveal which parties had successfully gained a seat.

Both the Green party and Plaid Cymru gained one seat, with the remaining four seats going to the Liberal Democrats in a landslide victory. The winning parties were invited to give short speeches and in all they reminded the electorate of the importance of using your vote.

Congratulations to all of the Year 10 pupils who volunteered and ran such positive and thoughtful campaigns. Thank you to the Year 12 Politics students for acting as Special Advisors to the parties and to Senior 10 for all of their help on the day - in particular Salma and Amog.

The school's encouragement of political participation reached a wider audience last week, when Dr Bevan represented CSL at the House of Commons at the final session of the AllParty Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Schools, Learning and Assessment’s Votes at 16 Inquiry. The meeting, chaired by Peter Swallow MP and attended by Minister Samantha Dixon, brought together selected contributors from across the UK, alongside MPs and members of the House of Lords, ahead of the APPG’s forthcoming report.

Votes at 16, introduced in Wales for the 2021 Senedd election and a prominent policy issue in 2026, is a significant national question with implications for how young people may participate in future UK general elections. The Minister outlined the government’s rationale for the policy, plans to prepare young people to vote, and the role schools may be expected to play. The session also provided time for questions and comments from contributors, with Dr Bevan taking part as one of the invited practitioners.
