In spite of some matches having to be cancelled due to waterlogged pitches, even at the Cathedral School or elsewhere due to the appalling rain, two matches have set the rugby season off to a promising start.
1st XV v St John's Porthcawl
Wednesday 10 September 2008
The game was a one sided affair although the opposition kept in touch throughout the game through simple handling and positional mistakes by CSL. The match itself was an excellent opportunity for the team to work on the positive defence system of playing front foot rugby; closing the opposition's options and directing their attack across the pitch rather than making territory. Three of the teams four tries were achieved by Andrew Leering who, when given space, was able to show his pace on the wing. The final try was by Tom Brennan, after a storming run by the captain Edward Dobbs, breaking the opposition's defensive line and bowling over the full back, popped the ball to Brennan who scored. Conversions were taken by D Davies 2/4. Lots of lessons to learnt, lots still need learning but an encouraging start to this season's campaign. St John's 7, Cathedral School 24. (GJE)
The team travelled to Porthcawl in appalling conditions for their first game of the season. Conditions were slippery underfoot which made the barnstorming runs of Tom Jeffs and Andrew Corfield's evasive patterns all the more impressive. Despite a forward performance that lacked cohesion, individuals demonstrated courage and strength against a larger pack to make a significant contribution to the Cathedral School's victory. The 45-30 score line was fantastic considering the torrential rain and implies that this team will continue to impress with their flair and determination throughout the academic year. (JJC)
