Pupils were inspired by Richard Parks, the first person ever to climb the highest mountain on each of the world’s seven continents and stand on all three poles within the same calendar year, this week.

Taking time out of preparation for his next world first expedition, which will be launched on St David’s Day, Richard chose four key values – Perseverance, Team Work, Ambition and Gratitude – to outline what he believes has contributed to his success.

The former Welsh rugby international, turned extreme athlete became the fastest Briton to ski solo, unassisted and unsupported from the coast of Antarctica to the South Pole in 2014, taking nine days off the previous British record and becoming the first Welshman to complete this iconic feat.

Showing a photograph of the Antarctic terrain, Richard likened it to life saying: “This is what life is life…wonderful, but it’s not always easy. Things will go wrong and it’s our ability to manage the unforeseen circumstances that will be a defining factor.

Drawing on his own experiences, Richard added: “Motivation comes and goes. What doesn’t is commitment – it pulls you through the tough times.”

Stephen Morris, Headmaster at the Cathedral School said: “We were delighted to welcome Richard to the Cathedral School. It was fascinating to hear about his achievements and the physical and psychological preparation he undertakes before an expedition.

“The values he shared with us – Perseverance, Team Work, Ambition and Gratitude – can be applied to any situation in life and will be very useful for our pupils to draw upon as they face challenges in school, be it in the classroom or on the sports field, and in their future lives.

“We all look forward to hearing what Richard’s world first challenge will be and wish him all the best.”
