A hugely enjoyable Junior Lunchtime Choral Concert took place this week in the Cathedral. This event was a wonderful opportunity for over 100 pupils who sing in choirs in the Juniors and Year 2 to perform in a prestigious venue with a glorious acoustic for choral repertoire.
The Junior Boys’ Choir, under the direction of Mr Aspden, opened the programme with an enthusiastic rendition of ‘Cockles and Mussels’ and ‘Consider Yourself’ from Oliver. Junior Girls’ Choir followed next, singing three contrasting songs linked by the theme of ‘the moon’. The recently formed Choral Novices comprises Junior girls who would like a taste of what it might be like to be Choral Scholar in years to come. They sang John Rutter’s setting of ‘All Things Bright and Beautiful’ with a lovely pure sound. Year 2 Choir were next up performing the Welsh Folk Song ‘Migldi, Magldi’ and ‘Mairzy Doats’ with charming conviction and energy. The Year 5 and 6 Choir Cantemus closed the programme with a trio of songs about clouds and water. Joni Mitchells ‘Both Sides Now’, was followed by an unaccompanied version of the spiritual ‘Down in the River to Pray’. This began with a soulful solo by Hugo M and concluded with the whole choir singing in three part harmony. The concert closed with a flourish of ‘Umbrellas’. Apart from the sheer quality, perhaps the most striking feature of this concert was the variety of sound that each choir makes.
