Letters to Cartref Care Home

Year 6 demonstrated love, care and kindness this week by writing letters to their friends at Cartref Care Home, letting them know we are thinking of them during this difficult time.

Bringing young and old together in order to share experiences and learn from one another, CSL and Cartref began their partnership at the beginning of the year. Since then we have enjoyed many successful events, having lots of fun and forming firm friendships. The pupils were so pleased to hear that all is well at the residential home but also frustrated that this term’s event with them is unable to go ahead as planned. As a result, they thought it would be nice to write to the residents. Having learnt about informal letter writing in English, pupils were all assigned residents of the Cartref community to write to – they then set about their task with energy and excitement.

The letters then had quite the ‘virtual’ journey before reaching the care home: https://twitter.com/cslcardiff/ status/1263402210441953280. Overwhelmed by this act of friendship, Cartref have expressed their joy at receiving such personable and caring letters - also commenting on the high standard of writing. Who knows, we might even develop inter-generational pen-pals! Below are a selection of excerpts from some of the letters. Mr Hemley

“Things must be quite quiet at Cartref as there are no visitors coming to the care home. I hope you are managing to find things that you enjoy. Did you do anything to celebrate VE day? I made a cheesecake with a Union Jack on it. I’m glad we’ve had such beautiful weather, I hope you’ve been able to enjoy it. I hope that soon we will be able to see the people we miss so much. Perhaps I will be able to visit Cartref this year. Until then, I hope that you keep safe and well”.

“I wanted to write to you during these uncertain times as I am almost certain that you are not getting out as much and you are not having as many visitors. You may not remember me but my name is Imogen and we met briefly when you came to the Cathedral School earlier in the year to talk to us about your experiences during World War II which I found fascinating. I was due to visit you at Cartref this term but sadly it is mosy unlikely that this will be possible, hence my decision to write to you”.

“I was wondering how you and the other residents in Cartref are managing during the lockdown? Our teacher Mr Hemley mentioned that at the beginning of lockdown you were all unfortunately isolated in your own rooms for 14 days. I do hope that time wasn’t too lonely for you. Do you have a window that looks out onto the park and lake? I wonder do you receive letters or phone calls from your family. I can only imagine that you must miss them terribly. It must be strange not to have been able to mix with all your other friends in the home. Do you keep yourselves busy throughout the day? Hopefully, now you have plenty of time to sit and enjoy the lovely sunshine with your friends and watch spring come to Roath Park with the blossoms and the greenery of the trees”.
