Musical Milestones

The Choristers have had a busy start to the new academic year and there has been an air of celebration around too.

It has been great to welcome back everyone and to see our new Probationers in the choir stalls. Jishnu B (Year 6), Toby N (Year 4) and Thomas J (Year 4) join the boys whilst Catherine C (Year 5), Abbey D (Year 5), Mali N (Year 4) and Mabel C (Year 4) have begun their duties with the girls.

Following a few days of getting up to speed with music for the term ahead, the Choristers all enjoyed their first bonding activity of the year; a very wet afternoon kayaking!

As has become tradition, the first Sunday services of term were sung jointly by girls and boys. It was a celebratory start to the year as we marked the making up of nine Probationers. Congratulations to Annie W (Year 5), Faith R (Year 5), Martha H (Year 5), Lottie L (Year 7), Valerie A (Year 8), Huw P (Year 6), Felix B (Year 6), Alex K-G (Year 5) and Zachary O’B (Year 5) who were all presented with their surplice and are now full choristers.

Later on Sunday, a full Cathedral welcomed the new Dean of Llandaff, Rev’d Dr Jason Bray with the Choir performing music by Dyson, Philip Stopford and Philip Moore. Having been installed, the very first action of the new Dean was to admit Senior Choristers as new Dean’s and Canon’s Scholars. History was made as, for the first time ever, a Girl Chorister received the title of Dean’s Scholar along with one of the boys. Gwenan H (Year 9) and Alex B (Year 9) take up the mantle of Dean’s Scholar with Austin D (Year 9) promoted to Canon’s Scholar. They join Kitty E-O (Year 10), Poppy R (Year 10) and Emma B (Year 10) in positions of seniority amongst the Choristers.

The Choristers are looking forward to a typically busy term ahead, punctuated by lots of special events. There are two BBC Radio Broadcasts this term; one on BBC Radio 4 on Sunday 20th October (recorded on the evening of Thursday 3rd October) and a live broadcast of Choral Evensong on BBC Radio 3 on Wednesday 18th December
