The high academic performance of the Cathedral School has been recognised once again by the national newspapers in their digest of GCSE results throughout the country. The Times placed the Cathedral School 12th in the UK amongst co-educational independent schools, higher than other well known schools such as Wellington College, Rugby and Oakham. In the Daily Telegraph the Cathedral School was also ranked as top co-educational school in Wales, and 65th top school of all types in the UK as a whole (419 were listed). The South Wales Echo and the Western Mail also had reports on the fact that the Cathedral School, along with local girls' school Howells, has bucked the trend of Welsh education lagging behind that in England, outperforming some of the best public schools in England.
78.11% of all grades achieved were A* or A, with the outcome of some appeals awaited where pupils were on the borderline of a top grade (so the figure may rise further).
The Headmaster, Stephen Morris, was quoted by the Western Mail: "At a time when there has been much hand wringing about the state of education in Wales at large, the traditional approach of the Cathedral School - solid academic teaching in traditional subjects, along with a wide co-curricular programme and an emphasis upon pupils' leadership skills and confidence - has been vindicated as a first class investment for parents. Huge congratulations to our pupils for their hard work."
