Schools of Sanctuary Taith Adfent
This half term's Schools of Sanctuary project was Taith Adfent which focused on raising awareness about refugees through engaging and thought-provoking activities.

Over four weeks, Primary pupils explored the theme of migration and refuge, gaining a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by those forced to flee their homes.

Week 1:
To commence the journey, the story Jesus Was a Refugee by Andrew McDonough was shared with the children, exploring the concept of Jesus’ family seeking refuge in Egypt. The story sparked discussions on the importance of welcoming strangers. In EYFS and KS1, pupils created welcoming plates of food for Jesus and his family, symbolising the kindness refugees often need. KS2 developed illustrated concept maps highlighting the contributions that refugees make to society, linking their ideas back to the story of Jesus as a refugee.

Week 2:
The second week focused on the difficult and uncertain journeys that refugees face. EYFS and KS1 read Ali’s Story by Salvador Maldonado, and KS2 watched The Journey by Francesca Sanna. Pupils reflected on the emotional and physical challenges of leaving everything behind in search of safety. They expressed their thoughts by writing messages of hope on footprints, which were displayed as a symbolic journey around the School.

Week 3:
Pupils were invited to imagine themselves as refugees, focusing on the patience required during long journeys. They watched What You Know About Patience? and wrote poems expressing their feelings about the refugee experience. EYFS and KS1 crafted acrostic poems using the title MY JOURNEY, while KS2 created poems inspired by the themes of patience and perseverance.

Week 4:
The final week culminated with a quiz and a poster competition designed to share accurate facts about refugees. The children worked on creating informative posters to educate others and challenge misconceptions. This encouraged a broader understanding of the refugee experience, reminding everyone of the importance of empathy, kindness and solidarity.

Taith Adfent has once again provided a meaningful opportunity for our school community to reflect, and build empathy and compassion. We look forward to continuing our journey as a School of Sanctuary, fostering understanding and support for all those seeking refuge.
