Shaking Things Up in Year 4
Year 4 were very fortunate to be visited by Dr Anna Horleston, a seismologist from the University of Bristol, who helped to launch their Rumbling Romans topic for this term.

The visit gave the children a fantastic opportunity to learn directly from a real scientist and expert in her field. Dr Horleston shared how earthquakes are measured, and the pupils were able to create and record their very own 'earthquakes' by jumping and clapping in the classroom, using her seismometer equipment. They were fascinated to see how their movements appeared as waves on the screen.

They also explored volcanic eruptions by experimenting with fizzy drinks and Mentos, comparing results to see which produced the most powerful eruption. This year’s winner was Cola Xero, narrowly beating Cream Soda, Diet Coke and Fizzy Vimto.

Throughout the afternoon, the children learned about plate tectonics, the layers of the Earth, and the science behind why earthquakes and volcanoes occur. Dr Horleston also shared exciting insights into Marsquakes and Moonquakes, which are part of her specialist areas of research. The session was full of fun facts, curiosity and excellent questions!
