Primary Open Morning
Wednesday 12 February 2025
Amnesty Club have been raising awareness of the challenges faced by Gypsies and Travellers in Cardiff as part of their broader commitment to inclusivity, kindness and social justice.
During this week’s Head’s Assemblies, pupils delivered impactful presentations to Senior pupils, shedding light on the barriers faced by these ethnic groups. They highlighted statistics such as Gypsy and Traveller pupils having the highest rates of absenteeism in both Primary and Secondary school last year, according to the Welsh Government, and that this corresponds to a distinct set of barriers they encounter while at school. They also emphasised the importance of combating stereotypes and advocating for equal opportunities in education, housing and healthcare.
To engage the school community further, the club launched a poster competition inviting pupils to create artwork promoting kindness and inclusion for Gypsy and Traveller children. Prizes will be awarded for the top three entries, with the first-place winner earning a unique opportunity to join the Amnesty Club on their upcoming visit to the Travellers Cooperative in Cardiff next month. This visit aims to deepen the club’s understanding of the rich cultural heritage and current challenges faced by the Gypsy community.
Thank you to Annabelle L, Mathilda L and Tom E for reminding us all that kindness and understanding are powerful tools for change.
