The Slimy World of Seaweed
24 January 2025
This half term's Big Science Question Assembly explored the incredible world of seaweed.
Our Junior pupils were captivated by a wealth of information about this often-overlooked marine organism. They learned about the diverse types of seaweed, their vital role in marine ecosystems, and their surprising range of uses. Seaweed, it was revealed, can be used to produce food, biofuels, and even fertiliser. It was also highlighted as a potential source for new medicines and a valuable tool in combating climate change.
The highlight of the assembly, however, was Mr Morgan's brave attempt to sample and identify the flavour of a selection of seaweeds. With a mixture of curiosity and trepidation, he tasted seaweed snacks ranging from deliciously sweet to super spicy (and everything in between). His reactions, a blend of grimaces and surprised approval, provided comedic relief and further emphasised the versatility of this marine plant.
The assembly successfully sparked pupil interest in the fascinating world of seaweed, encouraging them to look beyond its slimy exterior and appreciate its importance in our world.
Congratulations to Mabel C (Year 4) and Hanna H (Year 5) who were our most recent BSQ winners. Thank you to Philppa M (Year 5) for our new questions: How do glasses work?
