The Cathedral School continues its track record for outstanding results at A level, with its Year 13 students achieving 53% of all grades at A*-A and 75% at A*-B, securing places at the most competitive universities.
Once again, the most common grade was A, with 1 in 5 of all grades gained at A*; a wonderful achievement. The overall pass rate was 100%.
A third of students achieved three A grades or better. A quarter of our cohort took the highly regarded Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), securing an outstanding 100% A*/A grades. Five students will progress to read Medicine.
Head Boy, Lance Burn and James Knowles both secured the highest possible results of 4 A* and 3 A* grades respectively. Lance will read Medicine at Cambridge and James will progress to Birmingham to study Music. Lance, who studied Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics said: “I am so pleased with my results – it was definitely worth all of the hard work!
“I joined the Cathedral School at the beginning of Year 12 and was made to feel welcome from day one. Despite having only been here for two years, the School has provided me with so many opportunities, including playing in goal for the football first XI in the unbeaten Lent term and the privilege of being made Head Boy. I have made some great friends and been supported by outstanding teachers who not only prepared us for our exams but also for the years to come at university.”
Other top performers, scoring exclusively A* and A grades, included Head Girl, Ella Thomas, who will read Architecture at Nottingham; Cian Williams who joined the Cathedral School Sixth Form from Glantaf and will study Aeronautical Engineering at Bath; cousins, May-Ling and Katherine Shi who will both study Medicine at Cardiff; Sophia Strinati who recently won gold at the Surf Lifesaving British Championships and will read Chemistry at Birmingham and Jack Salen who will read Medicine at Bristol.
Nadia Van der Goes Van Naters, who won the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama’s Concerto Competition earlier this year is taking a gap year and hopes to study Veterinary Science next year. Ellen Woolf, who has been nominated for the prestigious Innovations Award will study Interior Design at De Montfort University.
Mrs Clare Sherwood, Head of the Cathedral School said: “We are absolutely thrilled that our students have achieved such excellent results, which is down to their hard work and the excellent teaching at the Cathedral School. Once again, the results are very strong across a wide range of subjects which is wonderful to see and further establishes the success of our sixth form.
“The Cathedral School sixth form offers excellent facilities and teaching, combined with outstanding pastoral care and a breadth of co-curricular opportunities, especially in music, sport and the arts. This is particularly the case with this year’s A Level students who have achieved so much, in addition to their examination results. We wish our students every success as they take their next step on their educational journey.”
The School will host an Open Morning on Saturday 6th October 2018 for Nursery to Sixth Form, followed by a Sixth Form Options Evening on Thursday 11th October 2018.
