Exceptional GCSE success once again for Cathedral School

Following their continued excellence at A Level last week, the Cathedral School is once again celebrating exceptional GCSE results.

An outstanding 49% of grades were the equivalent of A* or above (England Pathway), with 69% of all grades at A*/A. An incredible one third of our pupils secured 8 A* grades or above.

The most common grade awarded, in the reformed GCSEs, was the exceptional grade 9.

100% of pupils achieved at least five GCSE grades A*-C, 77% with 5 A grades or better.

Top performers who scored exclusively A*/A included Archie Baxter, shortlisted for the prestigious Innovations Award, James Bibey, a member of the Royal College of Organists, Erin James and Maya Rollnick, members of the first netball team, Alexander Rawnsley, star of countless school productions and Bryn Lloyd, the School’s outstanding participant in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award at Silver.

On news of his GCSE results, Archie, who achieved 12A* said: “I am so happy with my results. I thought I would do well, but not this well! All of the hard work has definitely paid off.” Bryn agreed, adding “I am really looking forward to staying at the Cathedral School for sixth form.” Archie and Bryn will both be studying Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Further Mathematics.

Maya, who achieved 10A* and an A and will study History, Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics at the Cathedral School, added: “I am literally over the moon!  I didn’t expect to do so well. I’m so glad I worked so hard. Thank you to all of the teachers for their support, especially in Science.”

Head of the Cathedral School, Mrs Clare Sherwood said: “I was absolutely delighted to congratulate the pupils this morning on one of the strongest sets of GCSE results in the School’s history. Following our continued success at A Level last week, we are thrilled that Year 11 have risen to the challenge of the new, demanding qualifications. That they have done so well is testament to their talent, resilience, hard work and the excellent teaching at the Cathedral School.

“I am incredibly proud of our pupils and teachers who work so hard to make the Cathedral School such a wonderful school with so many academic and co-curricular opportunities.

“I am very much looking forward to welcoming our new Sixth Form at the beginning of September, along with students from other schools, attracted by the small class sizes, outstanding results, strong emphasis upon preparation for top universities, and supportive pastoral care.”
