Celebrating Lunar New Year

29 January 2025
Celebrating Lunar New Year

Junior pupils celebrated Lunar New Year by exploring its traditions and learning about the significance of the event.

In Nursery, pupils listened to a story about the origins and customs of the celebration, learning that 2025 is the Year of the Snake. They discovered the legend of the animal race across a river, which determined the order of the Chinese zodiac. Pupils found out that they were born in either the Year of the Rat or the Year of the Ox, and learned why the colours red and gold are special during this festive time. To mark the occasion, they made lanterns representing the idea of letting go of the past and looking forward to the year ahead.

Year 2 pupils were excited to learn more about Chinese New Year from their classmates Alexander W, Jiaze Q, and Nathan W who brought their mums to school to present a shadow puppet show. Everyone had the opportunity to practise their literacy skills by learning to write Chinese characters and exploring the animals of the zodiac in more depth.

The Primary DIRECT team was also in the playground during lunchtime, handing out resources, crafts and other goodies as part of their mini project to raise awareness of Lunar New Year and share the joy of the occasion with as many pupils as possible.

A big thank you to everyone who shared this wonderful experience with us and helped make the celebration so meaningful.
