Primary Open Morning
Wednesday 11 February 2026
Well done to the strong team of Year 12 students who competed in the South Wales round of the Ethics Cup, held at Cardiff University’s John Percival building.
The team faced strong competition from the outset, drawn into a group with Howell’s School, Cardiff Sixth Form and Bishop Gore School. In their first match against Bishop Gore, the pupils were pushed to the wire in a tightly contested debate on democracy, voting rights, and mitochondrial editing. Despite excellent contributions from Cameron H and Amog M-B, Bishop Gore narrowly won 2–1, with their strong opening presentation tipping the balance.
Next up was Cardiff Sixth Form, debating ethical investing and life sentences for prisoners. Again, our team was up against the eventual champions of the tournament. Both teams impressed the judges, who praised the eloquence and sophistication of the arguments presented. Special congratulations to Patrick M and Wangsu X for their particularly elegant contributions.
In their final group match against Howell’s, our team secured their first points of the day with a resounding win. Topics included genetic engineering and protecting the environment, and Gwen M O, Deepa G, Sara K, Elizabeth B, and Phoebe B delivered an excellent performance, demonstrating confidence, clarity, and strong teamwork.
The day concluded with a thrilling final between Westbourne and Cardiff Sixth Form, one of the closest matches of the tournament. Our pupils left having gained valuable experience, showcased impressive reasoning and rhetoric, and represented CSL superbly.
