Chemistry Competitions

Chemistry Competitions

It has been an exciting and successful week for our Chemistry students across multiple year groups.

Our Year 12 Chemistry students travelled to Swansea University to take part in the prestigious Analyst Competition. They were challenged to complete two university‑level practical tasks:

  • a redox titration, requiring precision and excellent technique, and
  • a spectroscopy investigation, analysing samples using instrumental methods.

The students handled both tasks with maturity and confidence, experiencing a real insight into analytical chemistry beyond the classroom. We now await their results and are incredibly proud of their efforts and professionalism throughout the day.

Later in the week, two teams of Year 9 and 10 pupils proudly represented the school in this year’s Top of the Bench chemistry competition at Cardiff University. They achieved an exceptional result of joint second place - especially impressive given that neither team included any Year 11 pupils, who were away on an English trip at the time. Throughout the event, pupils tackled several demanding rounds, including chemistry knowledge, calculations, and general science understanding. Both teams performed brilliantly, showing excellent teamwork, confidence, and scientific skill. Their hard work has earned them a place in the All‑Wales Final later this year at Swansea University, with both teams ranking among the top three teams in the region. A huge well done to all involved — a fantastic achievement and a real celebration of our school’s scientific talent.
