Exceptional GCSE success for Cathedral School in new, more challenging qualifications

Following their continued excellence at A Level last week, the Cathedral School is celebrating exceptional GCSE results in both the pre-reformed and the new, more challenging qualifications.  

70% of all grades were exclusively A*/A, with 40% secured at A*. An incredible half of the cohort achieved 9 A*/A grades or better.  

Once again, the most common grade achieved was A* and 90% of grades were A*-B. 100% of pupils achieved at least five GCSE grades A*-C.  

Top performers included former chorister, Charles Price and Dariyan Khan who each scored 11A* and U17 Wales hockey player, Jessica Hill and Rachel Brown who both achieved 9A*.

On news of his GCSE results, Charles said: “I am so pleased with my results, especially with the new grade boundaries. I am also very happy not to have a resting heartbeat of 120, which it was first thing this morning!  I am very much looking forward to studying Physics, Mathematics, Further Mathematics and Chemistry at the Cathedral School sixth form and would like to thank the fantastic teachers, especially our Head of English, Mrs Vaughan.”  

Among the many students achieving 9A* or better, and joining Charles, Jessica, Dariyan and Rachel in the sixth form at the Cathedral School were National Youth Choir of Wales member, Benjamin Lycett, who will take History, Geography and English Literature at A Level and Dylan Zhao who will study History, Mathematics, Chemistry and Biology.  

Head of the Cathedral School, Mrs Clare Sherwood said: “I was absolutely delighted to congratulate the pupils this morning on their outstanding GCSE results. Following the School’s continued success at A Level last week, we are thrilled that Year 11 have taken on the challenge of the new, demanding qualifications. That they have done so well is testament to their talent, their hard work and the excellent teaching at the Cathedral School.

“A quarter of this year’s cohort were awarded the exceptional grade 9 for Maths or English which places them in approximately the top 3% of GCSE performance nationally; a phenomenal achievement.  

“I am incredibly proud of our pupils and teachers who work so hard to make the Cathedral School such a wonderful school with so many academic and co-curricular opportunities.  

“I am very much looking forward to welcoming our new Sixth Form at the beginning of September, along with students from other schools, attracted by the small class sizes, outstanding results, strong emphasis upon preparation for top universities, and supportive pastoral care.”
