We were delighted to welcome Inspire Works to the Cathedral School this week to provide a hands-on, Indonesian Gamelan Workshop. Gamelan is an indigenous Indonesian musical ensemble, particularly prevalent on the Islands of Bali and Java. It is characterised by fantastically sonorous gongs, metallophones, bells and drums – typically involving up to 25 players at a time.
Children in Years 5, 6 and 7 learnt about the cultural context of the Gamelan and enjoyed learning how to play it as a group, putting together a traditional Balinese composition. For Year 7s, this connected specifically with curriculum work in class this year.
