This week marked International Women’s Day and on Wednesday seven of our own Year 9 girls and girls from The Bishop of Llandaff High School, Whitchurch High School and St Teilo’s attended the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama for an afternoon of seminars to celebrate and champion women of the Creative Arts in Wales and in the wider world.
There were six speakers who all had different positions at the college. This included Helena Gaunt (Principal), Penny King (Head of Creative Programmes), Natalie Roe (Student Union President and Composer), Charlotte Graham (Composer), Emma Hele (Stage Management and Production) and Helen Sanderson (Head of Guitar). They all shared their experience as women working in the Creative Arts industry and their career paths.
After the panel discussion, we went into groups with certain speakers who we had chosen beforehand with some questions which we wanted to ask them. We all introduced ourselves by stating our names, the school we go to and our experience with music and drama. After this, we asked our questions to our speaker. It was incredible to see so many young women of different ages and backgrounds share their experiences in the Creative Arts Industry.
A lot was learnt from this very inspiring event. We heard about challenges they had faced leading up to that point in their career, their role models when growing up and so much more. It was an excellent experience, and it was great to be in an environment where young women were able to express their love and passions for music and drama while learning about the scope of career options available within the Creative Arts field.
