Languages Day at Cardiff University
05 March 2025
A stroll through Llandaff Fields and along the River Taff provided a peaceful and scenic route for ten Year 10 pupils who attended a Languages Day at Cardiff University.
Upon arrival, pupils were welcomed by university staff and given an inspiring lecture on why learning languages is so important in today’s world. It highlighted how speaking multiple languages can open doors to global opportunities in travel, business or even personal relationships. After the lecture, each pupil wrote a postcard sharing why they love learning languages, offering personal reflections on how it enriches their lives and broadens their horizons.
The next session focused on the wide range of job opportunities available, from translation and diplomacy to teaching and international business. This sparked plenty of enthusiasm among the pupils, who began to see the real-world value of their language studies. Afterwards, they were divided into three groups for interactive lessons in French, German and Spanish. In the French lesson, they explored the topic of hobbies, using the language to discuss their favorite pastimes and activities. The German group had fun learning some slang, while the Spanish lesson took the pupils on a virtual tour of famous Spanish landmarks, combining language learning with cultural exploration.
Following a delicious lunch, the pupils had the chance to try new languages, attending short sessions in Italian, Portuguese and Chinese. As the day drew to a close, the pupils walked back to school, full of excitement and new knowledge. The educational experience sparked a deeper interest in languages and their potential to shape future careers, as well as an inspiring reminder of the power of language to connect us to the world around us.
