This week we enjoyed a fantastic night of musical competition. 110 pupils performed in our six house choirs, with this year’s theme being Beatles songs.
All the choir members had given their own time to rehearse and participate, but what makes this event really special is that the piano backing parts and all the music direction are entirely in the hands of Sixth Form students! So a huge vote of thanks goes to Clara P (Dyfrig), Charlotte H and Eva J (Euddogwy), and Sarah K and Cathy R (Teilo).
The main choir songs were:
Dyfrig She Loves You
Euddogwy Blackbird
Teilo Help
The A capella songs, in which students have a free choice of selection, were:
Dyfrig Smile (Ben Bram arrangement)
Euddogwy Build me up, Buttercup (the Foundations)
Teilo December 1963 (Franki Valli and the Four Seasons)
Our judge, member of Only Men Aloud and also a highly successful musical director and producer, and more importantly an Old Llandavian, was the fabulous David Mahoney. It was very hard to rank the performances in order. In fact, only three points out of 200 separated the first from the last houses. His other problem was that the outstanding main choir, in his view, was Euddogwy’s, whereas the best A capella performance was Dyfrig’s Smile! In the end, he gave us the following result:
1st Dyfrig
2nd Euddogwy
3rd Teilo
The other outstanding feature of the night was the wonderful rock ‘n’ roll performance by the Year 10 band (Owen H, Ollie P, Ollie M and Myles McQ). They have rocked the school before, but never parents! Their rendition of Day Tripper was just what the evening demanded, but they really loosened up for their encore performance, Def Leppard’s Photograph.
