About the Head
Clare Sherwood became Head of the Cathedral School in September 2016. The first female Head at the School, Clare was previously five years the Deputy Head (Academic) at Blundell's School in Devon.
Like her predecessor, Stephen Morris, Clare was educated at Hereford Cathedral School where she won the prestigious Sidney Sussex Essay Prize for History. From Hereford, Clare progressed to read History at Pembroke College, Cambridge. Whilst at Cambridge, she held a choral scholarship, captained her college teams in Netball and Ladies’ Cricket, and played Ladies’ Football and Rugby.
Clare trained as a History teacher at Bristol University, and taught firstly at Charters Comprehensive School in Ascot. From there she moved to Leighton Park School in Reading to teach History and Politics, later becoming an Assistant Housemistress. She was Head of History at Wycombe Abbey School between 2007 and 2011. She is also a serving school inspector with the Independent Schools Inspectorate.
Clare continues to be have an active interest in both theatre and music having regularly appeared in both amateur and staff productions over the last 15 years. A keen public speaker and debater, she also continues her love of sport as Goal Keeper for her local netball team. She has served on the PCC of her parish church and taught Sunday School for many years.
Clare is married to Simon, a fellow teacher and musician; the couple have three children, two sons and a daughter.
Clare was commissioned as Head in Llandaff Cathedral by the Senior Provost of the Woodard Corporation on 8th September 2016.
