Deserving pupils achieve excellent GCSE results

Following A Level results on Tuesday, The Cathedral School’s Year 11 pupils also saw their continued hard work, in very difficult times, rewarded as they received their GCSE results this morning. It was wonderful to see them at school and to celebrate their success.

Top performers, Eva J, Sarah K, Charlotte M, Clara P and Philippa DW achieved all grade 9s/A*. On news of these outstanding results, former Canon’s Scholar, Sarah said: “I won’t say that I wasn’t hoping for something like this but it’s still such a shock and a fantastic surprise and testament to all of the support I’ve had from the staff in such a difficult year.”

Clara, a former girl chorister added: “It’s amazing how the School has supported us through these tricky times. I’m really pleased with my results and I’m looking forward to studying for my A Levels in September.”

Other pupils who achieved seven or more grade 8/9s or A* and above included Youth Parliament for Cardiff Member, Angel E, U18 Cricket Wales player, Avaneesh S, star of school productions, Charlotte H, music scholar, Nathaniel R, U16 Wales Hockey players, Nell L and Lucy H, dancer, Georgie M, Woodard Board prize winner, Tommy S and talented artist Cate V.

Head of the Cathedral School, Mrs Clare Sherwood said: “I was thrilled to welcome Year 11 pupils to school today to celebrate their very deserving GCSE achievements. They are a fantastic year group who have shown maturity and resilience over the last 18 months, supported by our incredibly hard-working teaching staff.

“Excellent education for the whole child is at the heart of everything that we do. Throughout the last academic year, we provided outstanding continuity of learning and high-quality pastoral care to support every pupil’s wellbeing which is so important at this and all times. In addition, our students benefitted from being part of school events, adhering to strict COVID guidelines, including sports matches, music and drama performances and Duke of Edinburgh’s Award expeditions which are all so important for children’s wellbeing.

“I am very much looking forward to welcoming our new Year 12 students at the beginning of September, including those joining us from other schools who are attracted by excellent results, breadth of opportunity, strong emphasis upon preparation for top universities, and supportive pastoral care.”

This year, The Cathedral School’s A Level students progress to the most selective and sought after universities, including Oxford, Imperial College London, Bristol, Cardiff, Bath, Leeds and Nottingham.
