House Chess Competition

House Chess Competition

House chess took place earlier this term and with the absence of, now OL, Bence S an opportunity for a new champion presented itself.

The competition follows a knockout format and seedings are carefully considered by Mr Gore, who has championed the competition for the last few years. Teilo and Dyfrig came out on top in the round of 16 with Euddogwy's competitors all suffering defeat. Jamie R and Tom E were the closest to making it through.

The quarterfinals saw the two favourites meet for Teilo. Govind A managed to overcome a spirited performance from Rohan P of Year 7 - certainly one to watch in future years. Jude K came out on top of the all Dyfrig match up, with Oscar H and Jack G also triumphing.

Semifinal day saw Teilo vs Dyfrig in both matches with Govind overcoming close friend Oscar and Jack defeating Jude to set up an all-Teilo final.

The Friday afternoon final was held on a new giant chess board, kindly donated by the Friends of the Cathedral school. Perhaps the change of perspective would be a leveller and give second favourite Jack a chance? So it was. With an eager crowd watching on, and the summer sun bearing down, Jack took the first game. A tense second game saw both clocks tick dangerously close to 0:00seconds but it was Govind's clock that counted down first handing Jack a surprising 2-0 victory. Govind, gracious in defeat, knew that Teilo had secured the 100points and was satisfied with this but I am sure he will be back for a title shot in Y12.

An excellent competition and congratulations to Jack, Teilo and all competitors.
