Year 10 pupils Oscar H and Aaruni B travelled to Oxford to compete in the Oxford Schools’ Debate Finals, beginning their day with a very early start before heading to St Peter’s College for their first debate.
The experience proved both challenging and inspiring. They took part in complex debates covering themes such as inequality, political decision-making and ethics, often facing teams from sixth-form colleges. Throughout the day, they observed a wide range of debating styles, from fast-paced, high-volume arguments to more measured approaches that used silence and timing to powerful effect. They also encountered different strategies, including the use of interruptions to disrupt opposing teams, and adapted their own approach as the competition progressed.
It was an intense and engaging environment, with strong arguments, thoughtful discussion and valuable feedback throughout. Oscar and Aaruni gained a great deal from the experience and are keen to continue developing their skills both individually and as a team.
