British Science Week

Pupils across the Primary Section have been celebrating British Science Week, a nationwide initiative that encourages young people to explore science, technology, engineering and mathematics through curiosity, creativity and asking questions about the world around us.

Throughout the week, each year group completed its own investigation, using scientific thinking to explore an intriguing question:

  • Nursery - Does the way food looks change how it tastes?
  • Reception - Does toast always land butter-side down?
  • Year 1 - What is the best design for a paper aeroplane?
  • Year 2 - How do bees help flowers?
  • Year 3 - How can you tell how old a shark is?
  • Year 4 - What's the best way to protect important objects?
  • Year 5 - What sort of vehicle would be best on the moon?
  • Year 6 - What does great teamwork look like?

Using various methods of observation, experimentation and discussion, our pupils tested ideas and shared their discoveries.

The week culminated in our Big Science Question assembly, where Junior pupils gathered in the Memorial Hall to explore the question How does electricity work? The hall was transformed into a giant national grid, with cables and pylons stretching across the audience to demonstrate how electricity travels from power stations to our homes. In a hands-on demonstration, pupils helped complete the network until the 'electricity' finally reached a model house, lighting it up to great excitement.
