Chorister Update

Chorister Update

Once the Michaelmas term ended, one of the busiest times of the year for our choristers was only just beginning.

During the first seven days of the holidays, the choristers sang to well over 2,000 people across two Carol Concerts and five Cathedral services, performing almost 40 pieces of music in the process. These included two services of Nine Lessons and Carols, for which over 1,100 tickets were booked in under 15 minutes.

The choristers also enjoyed the opportunity to perform music from the lighter side of their repertoire in two Christmas concerts. A lively rendition of Jingle Bells was made all the more memorable by the choir’s tenors stepping into the role of the percussion section.

Amidst the busyness of the season, the Christmas events, perhaps most importantly, offered the choristers the chance to spend time together doing something they love. Secret Santa gifts were exchanged on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day before everyone parted ways for a well-deserved break from duties. While being a chorister is very much about working as a team, special mention must go to Agnes C and Matthew W, who both sang the ‘big’ solo in Once in Royal David’s City, and to Matthew C and Annie W, who read brilliantly at the Carol Services.

The Lent Term is the period of the year when chorister recruitment takes place. We are looking forward to welcoming children from Years 2–4 to the Chorister Open Day from 14:15–18:15 on Saturday 24th January. This is the perfect opportunity to find out more about life as a chorister and to sing in a Cathedral service. Auditions for September entry to the choir will take place on Saturday 14th March. Please register for an audition via the Registrar (registrar@cathedral-school.co.uk)
