IET Faraday Challenge Day
15 January 2025
It was a pleasure to host the IET Faraday® Challenge Day where six teams of motivated Year 8 pupils engaged in hands-on challenges, and developed their problem-solving and teamwork skills.
The event brought together 36 students from four schools, including The Cathedral School, Fitzalan High School, Bishop of Llandaff High School and King’s Monkton School, for a day of exciting activities. Organised by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), the Faraday® Challenge Days aim to inspire young people to explore careers in STEM fields. Facilitated by experienced STEM professionals, the teams tackled real-life engineering problems, showcasing their creativity, innovation, and collaboration.
Each team competed for a spot on the national league table, with the top-performing teams advancing to the National Final where they could win up to £1,000 for their school to invest in STEM resources.
The brief was to design and build a prototype incorporating working electrical components to aid individuals with disabilities, create educational toys, or support outdoor activities while considering sustainability and battery efficiency. Judged by engineer Sharon Spackman and Cerian Angharad from the Association for Science Education (ASE) and the Institute of Physics (IOP), the winning team developed a communication box for children with speech or hearing impairments, demonstrating strong circuitry, innovation, and a passionate presentation. The event provided a valuable hands-on experience in engineering and teamwork.
Congratulations to the winning team consisting of CSL pupils Akul S, Georgia B, Ishaan T, Katy M, Rishi S, and Valerie A.
