Two CSL teams took part in the Southeast Wales heats of the Business Professional Women's public speaking competition at Llanwern High School.
Each team comprises three members: a speaker, a chairperson and an expressor of thanks. The competition format involves speakers working with the chairperson and the expressor of thanks from another team to carry out a spontaneous mock business meeting.
Team 1 featured Elizabeth B as speaker. She delivered a speech on coffee, exploring its history and the corruption and exploitation behind its preparation. Her exceptional use of wordplay and humour, combined with her skilled delivery, impressed the judges—particularly notable as it was her first time in the competition. Amog M B reprised his successful role as chairperson from the previous year. His experience shone through in his effortless performance, showcasing the authority needed to chair effectively. Max C-T served as expressor of thanks, taking on a different role this year.
Team 2 was led by speaker Hannah A, who delivered an impactful speech on why an AI government could be hugely detrimental to mankind. She spoke comfortably and eloquently, establishing herself as one of the strongest speakers in the heats and demonstrating remarkable versatility after previously serving as expressor of thanks. Patrick M took on the role of chairperson, with his use of humour making him stand out among the competition's chairs. Sam C was an expressor of thanks—one of the more challenging roles due to its spontaneous nature—and he confidently rose to the occasion.
The competition was tight, but both Cathedral School teams qualified. Team 2 finished as runners-up and Team 1 took first place, with only a few points separating them. Both teams will now compete in the semi-final in Bristol and we wish them the best of luck!
