You are Welcome

You are Welcome
This term, our School of Sanctuary work has helped pupils reflect on the meaning of welcome, safety, and compassion.

In the first half of Michaelmas, EYFS created vibrant You Are Welcome posters to greet child refugees who have been forced to leave their homes and begin new lives in this country. Several of these warm and thoughtful posters are now displayed on the SoS board in the Lodge.

Across KS1 and KS2, children explored a range of facts about refugees and migration, helping to challenge some of the myths and misunderstandings often presented in the media. Each year group produced posters representing a particular fact about migration, highlighting the many ways migrants contribute to our communities. These are now proudly displayed on the SoS board in the Gloucester building.

In the second half of the term, our work centred around the book Refuge by Anne Booth, which tells the story of Mary, Joseph and the infant Jesus fleeing to Egypt. This powerful retelling prompted thoughtful discussion about the Holy Family’s experience as refugees. Pupils then coloured Christmas cards as a reminder that Jesus himself once sought sanctuary, encouraging us all to show empathy, kindness and welcome to those who do the same today.
