School of Sanctuary

The Cathedral School Llandaff is proud to be the first independent school in the UK to achieve School of Sanctuary accreditation, joining a national network of schools dedicated to fostering a culture of welcome, inclusion, and understanding for refugees and those seeking sanctuary.

As a School of Sanctuary, we are committed to raising awareness of the challenges faced by refugees and asylum seekers, embedding values of kindness, empathy and community in all aspects of school life, and taking meaningful action to support displaced people locally and globally.

Our journey began with two years of research, training and project development, culminating in our accreditation in July 2022. Since then, we have continued to embed these principles into our curriculum and wider school initiatives. Throughout the year, we deliver projects that encourage understanding and compassion, using literature, discussion and creative activities to explore the themes of migration, resilience and belonging. Some of our key initiatives include:
  • Refugee Week: A cornerstone of our programme, where pupils engage in storytelling, art and discussions inspired by real-life refugee experiences. Highlights include visits from Ukrainian filmmaker Larysa Martseva and Old Llandavian Aled Lloyd-Owen, who has worked in humanitarian operations worldwide.
  • Taith Adfent: A reflective initiative exploring Jesus' journey as a refugee, linking biblical teachings with modern-day refugee experiences.
Our pupils have also taken part in fundraising and advocacy efforts, supporting organisations such as Amnesty International.
