Learning on the Move

Learning on the Move
Year 4 and Year 5 have been exploring the local area by undertaking topic-based walks.

Year 4 surveyed parts of the Taff Trail on their river walk, viewing and discussing the various physical and human features. The walk was alive with wildlife sightings, including a graceful heron, a diving cormorant, a family of mallard ducks with their fluffy ducklings...even a rare goosander made an appearance! They took some time to sketch the iconic Cardiff Castle, capturing its details against the scenic backdrop, and practised their stone-skimming skills on a pebble beach - a fun way to connect with the natural world.

Year 5 ventured to Cardiff Bay, linked to their topic of Pits and Ponies. Guided by the knowledgeable Environment Officer, pupils discovered how Cardiff’s dramatic rise during the Industrial Revolution was powered by the global demand for Welsh coal and iron. Walking in the footsteps of dockworkers and traders, they traced how the city’s fortunes were shaped by the booming export industry and how this growth positioned Cardiff as the beating industrial heart of Wales. This hands-on experience not only consolidated key learning but also sparked thoughtful discussion, proving just how powerful learning outside the classroom can be.
