Discovery Day (Year 7 entry 2027 only)
Thursday 4 June 2026
Year 4 enjoyed an engaging and educational visit to the historic town of Caerleon (Roman Isca), exploring the National Roman Legion Museum and the remains of the Roman fortress.
Pupils began by visiting the baths, learning about Roman bathing rituals and their wider use for relaxation and exercise. At the amphitheatre, they imagined life as gladiators, bringing Roman entertainment vividly to life. In the barracks, they compared the living conditions of soldiers and centurions, with particular interest in the communal latrines—an early example of flushing toilets.
In the museum, pupils explored a range of artefacts, including gemstones recovered from bath drains, a Roman skeleton, and reconstructed barrack rooms, offering insight into daily life. The visit concluded with a Roman dinner party experience, where pupils took on different social roles and learned about Roman food and society.
It was a memorable way to bring their learning about the Romans to life!
